“Smell her neck, bite her ear, touch her hairs and make her giggle; and she won’t forget you ever.”
― M.F. Moonzajer, A moment with God
Overview
The platysma is a superficial muscle that lays under the skin of the neck overlapping the sternocleidomastoid muscle. This looks more like a broadsheet that arises from the fascia of two major muscles; the pectoralis major and the Deltoid. Its fibers cross the clavicles and proceed obliquely around the neck.
With aging, the skin overlying the muscles starts thinning, and along with possible hypertrophy of some of the muscle fibers, cordlike structures start to appear in the anterior neck that people commonly refer to as tendons. These are thought to be unappealing and aesthetically unpleasing.
How to treat Platysmal Bands?
There have been mainly two ways to reduce the appearance of these bands:
- Neuromodulators – Like Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport. These have shown to relax the underlying fibers. Hence, reducing the appearance of the hyperdynamic bands of muscle fibers. At Chrysolite Aesthetics, we have had beautiful results with this treatment.
Pros: simple procedures, takes few minutes, non-surgical, safe.
Cons: repeated treatment needed every 4-5 months. - Platysmoplasty – This is a surgical procedure, commonly reserved for more severe cases when multiple neck problems are present at the same time.
Pros: multiple neck problems addressed, longterm results.
Cons: surgical procedure, requires long downtime.
