Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a brand-name neuromodulator that specifically works against certain wrinkles and fine lines. As a neuromodulator, it affects the way your nerves and muscles communicate and can reduce unintentional muscle movements.
Botox is an injectable form of botulinum toxin type A, which is the drug’s active ingredient. It’s the same active ingredient that you can find in Dysport® and Xeomin®, which are available as alternative options to brand-name Botox at Chrysolite Aesthetics.
Upon injection, Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin cause the underlying muscles of your face to stop flexing involuntarily. The overlying creases then disappear while the drug is active beneath your skin.
Which wrinkles can I target with Botox?
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin don’t treat just any wrinkles. The three injectables specialize in treating a certain category of wrinkles called dynamic wrinkles. These usually appear in the form of fine lines that aren’t too saggy or deep, like:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
Dynamic wrinkles form over time as you smile, frown, and make other facial expressions. Each time you move your face, your skin crinkles in a certain way according to the movement.
While your skin is still young with little UV damage, it can easily bounce back to smoothness when you rest your face. As you accumulate more damage over time, your skin loses its ability to bounce back and the creases remain in place even while your face is at rest.
How long do the results of Botox last?
Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport all have similar durations for their results. Each of the injectables has different inactive ingredients, with Xeomin being the purest of the three. They all last for an average of four months before the product dissipates within your skin, which can vary based on how your body metabolizes them.
If you enjoyed your results from Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport, you can continue your treatment with maintenance injections every few months. Some people find that the results become less noticeable as they continue getting maintenance injections. If this is the case for you, Dr. Abu-Zeitoon might recommend switching to one of the other two products.
